PRESS RELEASE: 19 August 2008 – Album launch
Novel distribution method or throwing money away? The Wonderland Project release debut album The History of Science & How to Mend a Broken Heart
Oxford, Brighton and everywhere, 25/08/2008 — Monday 25th August sees the rather unusual release of the debut album by electro-popster duo The Wonderland Project, after a four-year gestation. Forgoing the usual appeal to MySpace-gathered kith and kin, the band will instead randomly distribute good old-fashioned CDs as they and their agents travel around the country. They’re free, of course, and if you find one you can be part of TWP’s roving album experiment.
Finders of the limited edition, numbered CD will be encouraged to rip the songs to their computer, before leaving the CD somewhere else for others to find. They will also be asked to tell the band via a website where the CD was dropped, so the individual journeys can be plotted on the roving album map. Of course, there will be some casualties along the way, some awol editions lost on a circular bus round Bridlington Bay. But the more people play, the longer we can track the little blighters.
“The success of the album will be judged solely on how far the CDs get,’ says Simon from the band. “If there’s no response, then the project’s a failure. But if we see CDs repeatedly dropped off then it’s a success, although admittedly not a very lucrative one. We hope people are going to want to play the game and join in. The important thing is for people to feel free to pick the thing up in the first place.”
The History of Science & How to Mend a Broken Heart blends classic English observational songwriting with intricate, moving and occasionally daft electronic/acoustic arrangements.
Scott says: “We were trying to produce sounds that we were hearing around us, or at least to evoke them – tea and sandwiches on the beach, or bass tubes in late-night supermarket car parks. That sort of thing.”
The uncharitable audio engineer says: “You can’t give out a f***ing manual with it.”
For those unlucky enough not to find a CD on the bus to work, the album will also be available on iTunes and Amazon (physical CD in the UK, download elsewhere).
Thanks for helping us play the game…
